Skilltech
Skilltech provides IT and personal development training to black and minority ethnic people, refugees and asylum seekers over a 12-week course.
Aims
- To provide an IT training and personal development programme tailored to individual needs
- To build skills that increase confidence and help gain access to further opportunities in education and employment.
Course Benefits:
The course we offer is designed to empower black minority ethnic people, refugees and asylum seekers and in the following ways:
- learning IT skills
- gaining recognised computer qualifications
- improving English language levels
- building confidence in communications skills
- providing opportunities for self-expression
- enhancing social skills
- building self-esteem
- becoming accessible to the local labour market
- providing routes to further education
Students on the 12-week course receive a personalised training plan incorporating certified computer qualifications, communication skills, job search skills and English language support.
The course is free, providing all eligibility criteria are met. We can also provide some assistance with childcare and travel expenses.
Who is Eligible?
Black and minority ethnic people, refugees and asylum seekers currently living in Edinburgh and Lothian.
- Applicants will not be restricted by length of residency, employment status or time spent claiming benefits.
- Successful candidates must be available to attend four days a week (Monday to Thursday) for a period of 12-weeks.
- A basic command of written and spoken English is essential.
No previous computer experience is necessary. Those with more experience can also benefit from gaining recognised qualifications.

Qualifications Available
With professional assistance, individuals design their own computer training plans and can select from any of the following qualifications.
- ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) – seven modules in different aspects of computer knowledge.
- Basic Concepts of IT
- Using a Computer and Managing Files
- Word Processing
- Spreadsheets
- Database
- Presentations
- Information and Communication
- ECDL Advanced – gain advanced knowledge in any of the following:
- Word Processing
- Spreadsheets
- Database
- Presentations.
- SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) Units – a variety of units are available to suit beginners and more experienced computer learners.
- Word Processing 1
- Word Processing 2
- Introduction to Computer Applications
- IT Office Applications 2
- Word Practitioners
- Spreadsheet Practitioners
- Database Practitioner
