Tuti’s Story
Originally
from Indonesia, Tuti had real doubts about ever finding employment
in Scotland. She worried that work experience and qualifications
from Indonesia would go overlooked and lacked confidence
in her English language skills.
These are barriers that black and minority ethnic people
living in Scotland commonly experience, especially when English
is a second or other language. However, Tuti’s commitment
to learning has helped her overcome these barriers and she
has now obtained permanent sustainable employment.
Taking part in the Skilltech project late last year was
an important first step: Tuti gained the European Computer
Driving Licence, a qualification widely recognised by UK
employers and received additional support with English language
and employability skills.
Tuti followed up her training by undertaking voluntary work
in an administration role at Saheliya and also found a work
placement with the Social Work Department at Claremont House.
She soon starts permanent employment providing administration
support at the Social Work Department at Ashley Ainslie Hospital.
