In February we were contacted by Lisa Perry of Historic Scotland who wanted to offer a work placement opportunity to one of this year’s Edinburgh Women’s Training Course trainees.

As Resource Centre Manager for Historic Scotland in Edinburgh, Lisa felt that such an opportunity would be of benefit to both her own organisation and to the trainee taking up the placement. And Lisa, is certainly in a position to know the benefits involved, as she herself graduated from ourwomen only course in 2000.

Aran Woodfin will be taking up this placement. She has a keen interest in Fine Art and Art History and was particularly interested in this placement which will involve the use of MS Access, MS Excel and Horizon (a library cataloguing package). Aran will also get the opportunity to assist with client enquiries, research and Internet uploads.

If your organisation would be interested in providing a work placement opportunity to a future trainee, please call Susan on 0131 554 5656 or email susan.turpie@nisusscotland.org.uk

Carrie Macdonald Succeeding with FlexIT

Carrie Macdonald is 22 and has been blind since she was six months old. She recently began attending our FlexIT project, which concentrates on enabling adults with disabilities or health concerns and their carers, to increase IT skills .

Carrie has been developing her word processing and spreadsheet skills using Braille manuals and specialist software, called JAWS, which reads out the text appearing on the screen. With an SQA qualification now under her belt, she hopes that her new skills will enable her to get some secretarial work in the voluntary sector.

She would encourage anyone with a disability to try learning: “It really does make your life better. It improves your job prospects and it’s great fun!”

If you are interested in the flexible learning opportunities and assistive technology offered by FlexIT, contact Joanna on 0131 5545656 or email joanna.turnbull@nisussscotland.co.uk
