Nisus Scotland Celebrates 21st Anniversary
Nisus Scotland celebrated 21 years of success with a little help from Edinburgh's Lord Provost, The Rt Hon George Grubb.
Established in 1986 as the Edinburgh Women’s Training Centre, Nisus Scotland supports people facing multiple barriers into employment, or onto further education or training.
Now based in Leith, the organisation empowers over 150 people every year as they learn new I.T. and communication skills and increase their confidence on one of the free courses. Students include people with disabilities, lone parents and people from black and minority ethnic communities.
Despite Edinburgh being voted the best place to live in the UK by TV show "Location, Location, Location", there is still a lack of skilled labour in the city. Nisus Scotland is playing its part by enabling Edinburgh residents to acquire the necessary skills to change their lives and gain employment, as well as helping to keep the local economy booming.
Former student Elisa had been unable to secure employment before enrolling at Nisus Scotland -
"I'm very grateful for the new start Nisus Scotland has given me. I learned valuable new skills and after completing my course, managed to get myself a great job".
The organisation was delighted to have the Lord Provost visit the centre as the City of Edinburgh Council has supported Nisus Scotland from its inception over 20 years ago.
Lord Provost, The Rt Hon George Grubb said:
"Nisus have played a vital role in many lives over the past 21 years helping many to achieve their full potential. I am delighted to be a part of their anniversary celebrations and I wish the charity continued success in helping people get the skills they need to overcome barriers to education and employment".
Ryan Mackie, Nisus Scotland Chief Executive said:
"We are very grateful for the assistance of the City of Edinburgh Council and all our supporters which has enabled us to successfully empower hundreds of people in Edinburgh and we look forward to the next 21 years of success."
